Speedmapping

Speedmapping is a fun event that allows mappers to create small SP or DM levels in a short time (few hours instead of weeks or months, as full-size maps take), then share them with each other and the community. It's about enjoying the process of mapping, experimenting with new ideas, seeing how other people realize a certain theme, or just for exercise, without the pressure of having to create something utterly perfect. These events are held more or less regularly (almost every week) and usually produce around three maps, occasionally up to twice or even thrice as many, and everybody can participate. So far, there have been about 125 SM sessions - you can check out most of the packs in the SpeedQ1 files folder. For latest information and possible questions about speedmapping, refer to this thread.

During this QExpo, there will be two speedmapping events, in which you can participate by sending your compiled map(s) within the deadlines to neg1ke .:at:. gmx .:dot:. net. The packs will then be announced in this booth and at Func_Msgboard.

SM event #1:
Theme: "Ten years later" (*) - Anything related to Quake's 10th anniversary. How did maps look back then, how do they look now? Maybe a small 2006 overhaul of your favorite SP or DM map of the past, a tribute to some level / mapper / theme you particularly liked, or just something in a map you would not have done ten years ago...
Results: Only two maps this time - Zwiffle offers action on both, floor and ceiling, neg!ke travels ten (and more) years back in time style-wise. Comments?

SM event #2:
Theme: "Episode 1 in one map" (*) - The most famous fourth of Quake squeezed into just one map. The architectural or thematical highlights of the first episode reproduced - either in seperate rooms, or smoothly blended into one another (the other three episodes are of course welcome as well); or anything else in this respect...
Results: Five SP maps in E1 style / places by bambuz, generic, lurker, neg!ke and Zwiffle. Comments?

(*) All themes are optional of course, so if you would
rather like to follow something else, feel free to do so!

This would not be a proper 10th anniversary if these two events did not hold a special surprise, though. Therefore, Spirit offers one of his hand-crafted metal Quake runes as a reward for the best map of the packs. Of course that does not mean this is a competition - not the biggest map will win, but rather the most original / fun - it is supposed to be a means of attracting more people, also 'less skilled' mappers, in order to have as many maps as possible in the end.

Turtlemapping

Turtlemapping means creating an original SP or DM map within one week. This increased time naturally leads to bigger / more elaborated levels than speedmaps, but still allows mapping for fun without much pressure (unless one gets carried away). There have been several turtlemap events in the past, the lastest one took place to celebrate the 100th speedmap pack exactly one year ago - again, they can be found at SpeedQ1.

Obviously, there will also be a turtlemap event accompanying this QExpo:
The timelimit will be slightly longer according to the 10th anniversary, so you have 10 days to make your map and send it to neg1ke .:at:. gmx .:dot:. net.

The theme for this event is "Classic Quake", meaning that your map has to use one of Quake's classic texture themes (base, medieval, metal, wizard). Two mappers have already confirmed their participation, planning to do maps in metal and elderworld style. Depending on how many levels come together, we might consider releasing them in some kind of episode.
Results: The release of the pack will be delayed a little, watch out for the news post at Func_ in the next couple of days (or weeks? hehe).

If you have any questions / concerns / suggestions, feel free to get in touch with me via email, Func_, or IRC (most likely in #terrafusion or #qexpo).

Now go map! :)
